VERSUS emphasizes the performative nature of human behavior. Two single-channel videos overlap, depicting different worlds: one showing myself engaged in mundane activities, and the other portraying myself in a Japanese Butoh performance. The inspiration for VERSUS comes from my brother, who suffered from hearing spirit voices for years and was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia and placed on medication. Disturbed by this personal experience within my family,
I developed a fear regarding my own sanity, which led me to seek an understanding of my brother through psychiatry and traditional religions. Hence, the otherworldly composite mimics the limiting binaries we adopt in our beliefs about what is considered normal and aberrant.
This work was featured at the 4th Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition 2014.
