VERSUS
2011/ performative video, 8 min 53 sec

VERSUS emphasizes the performative nature of human behavior. Two single-channel videos overlap, depicting different worlds: one showing myself in mundane activities, and the other showing myself in a Japanese Butoh performance. The inspiration for Versus comes from my brother, who has suffered from hearing spirit voices for years and was eventually diagnosed as schizophrenic and put on medication. Upset by this personal experience within my family, I developed a fear about my own sanity, which led me to try to understand my brother through psychiatry and traditional religions. Hence, the otherworldly composite mimics the limiting binaries that we adopt in our beliefs regarding what is normal and aberrant.
